Sheet Iron Rally 2013
May 18th and 19th

Awesome time riding the Sheet Iron rally this year with friends.
We rode over 350 miles of mostly dirt trails for two days, from Stonyford CA to Fort Bragg where we spent the night, and returned to Stonyford the next day on a different route.
There were 500 riders, and usually two ways to go- hard route and easy route, and whichever way you went, there was lots of dust...

Friday night, arrive at Stonyford to camp and get ready for an early morning start...
Lewis Bosson arrives, and other members of the Piston and Chain moto club out of SF...

The rally is put on by the Oakland motorcycle club...

There is a tech check to make sure all bikes have spark arrestors and pass the sound test, even though we are mostly deep in the forest, at times we have to jump on roads through towns to link trails...

Most of the bikes there were KTM dirt bikes, but some people rode on bigger adventure bikes, making for a real challenge... (Charlie Springer and Tom Lamar from P&C)

I didn't take many photos on the first half of day 1, just concentrated on riding fast, but I did get some at lunch, here's Matt Work, one of the founders of Piston and Chain, and an all around great guy...

When we did hit the pavement, it was fun to be rolling along on our dirtbikes with knobby tires dressed in full battle gear... (picture of me by Fast Jimmy Nolan)

Here's me and my buddy Jonathon Kwong, he managed to do most of the hard routes, and even one expert, on his 950, this bike weighs a solid 250 lbs more than what I was on... Jonny rips...

We rolled up on another guy on a 950 who was trying to repair a flat tire, we showed him how to use his side stand to get the tire off...

At times route finding was tricky, but usually worked out...

And that was day 1...

DAY 2
I started day 2 at Starbucks with my buddies Jimmy and Jonny, we were looking forward to lots of dirt, and I wanted to get some actions pics...

The route started with everyone on fire roads with a little bit of off roading (Cody Daniel of P&C unfortunately slid into a tree at the beginning of this day and fractured his leg and had to be airlifted out- heal up buddy!)

Then the fun riding began... (Tommy Payne and Jonny Kwong)

While riding on a single track on the side of a mountain, I took a quick look at the vista, (rule 1- the bike goes where you look...), Thanks for the help guys...

Jonny and Tommy rock the rocks...

But the heat makes everything harder...

Awesome ridge riding, lots of rocky climbs and descents, some made it on the first try, some didn't...

A great weekend!
Now time for some real races!!
